It is said that Brahmastra is released by a mantra derived from gayatri mantram.
Some also believe that Gayatri mantram itself is used to release Brahmastra.
Then a question arises- why can't everyone who knows Gayatri mantra release Brahmastra?
I'm a twice born (Brahmin) and since the day of my thread ceremony (Upanayanam), as a tradition i should chant Gayatri mantram daily, and i do. So can i release Brahmastra? Definitely NOT!! Then what's the difernce between me and Dronacharya (another Brahmin) who could release Brahastra? The answer being a simple fact which is detailed below:-
All Mantras have great potency. One has to gain siddhi on a particular mantra before it works miracles for him. Now what is siddhi? Every mantra needs a particular no. of repeatation after which it becomes 'Siddh'. Siddhi is nothing but when a sadhaka chants with full concentration a particular mantra for a particular no. of times (no. varies and is either in thousands or lakhs or crores for each type), it gives him siddhi in that. Siddhi is nothing but that particular person himself becomes charged with that mighty energy.
In the case of Brahmastra, when a person is trained how to chant Gayatri mantra for Missile purpose, a person has to gain siddhi on it, and when he acquires it, he gets energized. With that energy when he releases even a grass blade by chanting that Gayatri mantra it turns into Brahma Missille due to his own charged energy and the missile inturn derives it's power from Lord Brahma.
This siddhi concept is not only limited to Astras, but it's all about a human being turning divine...We have seen many examples in our scriptures. Kapila muni had destroyed 1000 sons of Sagar just within a moment. Did he use any weapon? NO..he used his enerygy. How did he gain his energy? He should definitely have worked on some divine mantra and got energized himself.
We have also observed in the scriptures that sages usually refrain from giving curse. Only when there is no way they give curse. Why? Why can't they freely donate curses to anyone whom they see as sinners?
Reason is, when a siddh yogi (Energized human body) gives a curse, it decreases his aura (Teja/Energy) to a large extent, since curse also works by deriving enerygy from the Yogi's energy pool. However it wastes the energy to a great extent. so, usually saints refrain from wasting the energy since they always believe it should be used constructively. The same thing holds good for releasing the Brahmastra kind of Maha Weapons, sinc ethey also consume lot of energy and hence should be used when there is no other go.
Now coming back to Brahmastra again:-
Brahmastra is released by Chanting Gayatri in a specific manner, the syllable sounds and pitch may differ from normally what we chant during our puja.
So, a question arises, what's the diference between those two chants? Let me tell you that Sonic energy (Sound) is extremely powerful, since it's afterall energy!!
Any noise made at a particular frequency can destroy objects. We have examples where sound made in a particular high pitch destroys glass (metals and other objects as well).
In Stephen Knapp’s article “Frequencies that can kill, heal and transcend” he states, “The science of vibrations and frequencies and how they effect people is something that has been around for thousands of years. We can still find evidence of this in the ancient Vedic texts of India. These explain not only the results of using the frequencies of words and mantras, but also supply instructions in some cases. The sages of ancient India used it to produce various results in the rituals they performed, and from the mantras they would recite. If the mantras were recited in particular ways, certain amazing results would take place, including changing the weather, producing certain types of living beings, or even palaces. Others used it to produce weapons, like the Brahmashtra weapon, which was equal to the modern nuclear bombs. Specific mantras could be attached to arrows, with the sound causing powerful explosions when the arrow reached its target. Others used the science of vibrations to bring their consciousness to higher levels of perception, or to enter spiritual reality.” (This paragraph referred from here).
Now another question arises; if that is the case for Brahmastra, when a person chants gayatri at a very shrill sound, wouldn't that effect the listeners?
Well, it's not the sound which we hear. There are two types of sounds, before describing them let's know what is sound.
Sound is referred to as the “Nada Brahma” or the divine sound, that is to say, in abstraction too there is a connection with the divine. There are two types of sound: un-struck/un-heard sound and struck/heard sound. Un-struck sound is a vibration of ether, the upper or purer air near the celestial realm. The enlightened yogis seek the unstruck sound called “Anaahata Nada”, and only they can hear it. The struck sound or “Aahata Nada”, is the vibration of air in the lower atmosphere closer to the earth. It is any sound that we hear in nature or man-made sounds, musical, and non-musical. So to release Brahmastra it's the Anahata sound which is used to chant Gayatri and not the normal Aahata sound which we use for puja.
Also, since it's a person's divine energy which is used to propel the Brahma missile which in turn derives further energy from Lord Brahma, the destruction effect varies. It's not like if Drona releases Brahmastra, whatever effect/destruction it caused, would be the same if Lord Brahma himself releases the astra. In former case destruction would be massive, but in latter case it would be an annihilation in an astronomical range...!!
The sum and substance of this article is- Gayatri Mantra chanted in normal way can have healing and good benefits on a human, but when particularly chanted in a different/varying pitch (Anahata Sound), can turn a Darbha (Grass Blade) into a Brahmastra! Only the Guru teaches the right desciple the way to invoke Gayatri into running a Brahma missile. Otherwise any tom dick and harry who knows Gayatri mantra could have played with Brahmastra. Thank God for not disclosing the key to everyone, otherwise the world would have become a grave yard long back!!
Brahmastra in Metaphysical plane:-
Till now we have discussed about Brahmastra in it's real and true form. But let's correlate this to our inner self and see what ebenfit we achieve if we release the Brahmastra present in our own body.
There are two planes,
- Physical
- Meta-Physical
In physical plane if we understand Brahmastra then it's a weapon of mass destruction. We have discussed this above. In Meta-Physical plane we can assume Brahmastra as the Kundalini Serpent power. This Brahmastra is located within the 'Mooladhara Chakra/Base shell' of our body situated near the Anus.
When a sadhaka (Warrior) meditates and raises his Kundalini, his kundalini (Read Brahmastra here in this context), derives energy from his base chakra (Mooladhara) and propels upwards. On its way, it penetrates through 5 other chakras deriving energies from them at every stage. Finally it hits the target-Crown chakra (Sahasrara) and explodes there with a brilliance. That explosion annihilates all "Illusion/Maya", and leaves the sadhaka with the debris called as "Aham Brahmasmi" feeling.
So, everyone should yearn for pocessing and releasing one's inner Brahmastra but the Brahmastra in physical world should always be in the hands of right people!
I like this post. I have heard that sound and vibrations were used in wars those days and I think you are right.
ReplyDeleteI like this. and I accept in general what is said here and find it right too.
ReplyDeletewould like to hear more the person who posteed the same. my email is gundago@gmail.com

ReplyDeleteShivoham bhai, bina brahmchariya ke koi nhi aainge.... Hari ka naam hi kalyug me khafi hai...
DeleteHi Mukesh,
ReplyDeleteForget about pleasing the Kshudra-Devatas like yakshas, Gandhervas etc. They would be of no help to you. Aim of human life is to get salvation, and not to gain material desires fulfilled by these Gandhervas etc.
if you are interested to see god then first learn to see him everywhere. There is no god who is away from you. God is everywhere, around you, inside you also.
Sorry the above statement is very contradictory
ReplyDeleteif once is able to see god everywhere then one should also be in a position to see god in yakshas and Gandharvas.
I am wonder-struck to hear the word kshudra-Devatas.. which mean there should be
Vaishya devatas, Kshtriya Devatas and Bhramin-Devatas and then should be the ultimate Eshwara Tatva. The chatur varna is not for devata. These must be from some sort of human sampradayas...
Dear Anonymous friend,
ReplyDeleteThere is no contradiction. One should be able to see God everywhere, and for such a mahatma kind of devotee even in gandhervas he would see supreme being. But Mukesh who posted his query above doesn't want to see God for tehs ake of devotion of selfless love. His mind dwells in "material desires". Therefore he want to please gandhervas and Yakshas. So, that is NOT ACCEPTABLE for the followers of Sanatana Dharma. That is allowed in Tantra kind of worship probably. So, there is no contradiction in my advise, only gap is in ur understanding.
Secondly, I am wonder struck inf act to know that you understood "Kshudra" as "Shudra". Both words are poles apart in meaning, however they sound alike. "Kshudra" means "lesser". "Kshudra devata" means "lesser beings". Assuming that you aren't aware of Hinduism concepts want to give a brief here. Gandhervas, Apsaras, Yakshas etc are equal to humans, they all are just different categories of species, only difference is that they are little elevated beings. Even you or I can gain greater rank than theirs by penance or by devotion or by Jnana. That's where "Kshudra devata" (means lesser gods) is applied.
And you were talking about "Shudra", which is a varnas based stuff and not related to current discussion at all.
Hope this clarifies! If not, feel free to question again, would help u for sure!
I am simply moved by reading how beautifully Santosh Kumar Ayalasomayajula ji tries to make us understand the things.
ReplyDeleteQuoting Mr. Mukesh I would like to say that once upon a time Me too was interested to come in contact with celestial beings “ Kshudra devatas” out of curiousity to know and see how the celestial beings are and how do they behave and interact. But with the advice of one of my enlightened guide I came to understand that such curiosity may lead to fatal consequences many a times. Reason is… celestial beings possess pure and powerful aura which we, as per our present life style, may not be able to sustain their energy field. Secondly if at all we are successful in invoking a celestial being, things may not move according to our wish and our bio energy field may suffer severely. During sadhana many of the so called sadhakas either go mad or die because of this reason. Brahmacharya, tapashya and sadhana are the mediums through which we purify and energise our bio-energy field first to sustain the shock of the first glimpse of the celestial beings. If we are energetic enough , we can come in communion with the celestial beings and interact with them thereafter. So it is always advisable to refrain from such activities without being a deserving candidate for the said purpose..
Thanks BPT Ji for putting your thoughts here.
DeleteThanks a ton Respected BPT ji...for this complete answer filled with utmost practical & authentic knowledge...for the very first time I have came across with such a beautifully crafted explanation in respect of possibilities of invoking a celestial beings. Hatts off ! for making these secretes understandable to those potential minds who wander here and there in search of optimum knowledge.
DeleteGood writing mantra shastra & energy of sound. It's true that gayatri mantra is brahmastra if pronounced in a differant manner. I am mentioning few astras arose from Gayatri mantra. These are written in Vasishta Dhanurveda samhita.

That which protects can also destroy. Chanting a gayatri mantram provides protection or acts as kavacham (armour). Chanting it differently (as indicated above) will turn it into a means for destruction. In today's materialistic world, people might end up suing them for lowly purposes. So, please refrain from revealing mantras of great energy in an open forum. Also, my two cents worth, the above mantras are not complete.
DeleteNagendra Chemuturi ... can a person with pious and unselfish motive use this divine mantra to curb corruption & serve humanity in some sattvic sense.
DeleteThanks, Bharadwaj for such a wonderful reference from mantra shAstra.
ReplyDeleteApparently this text Vasishta dhanurveda is available for download in Maharsbi Mahesh Yogi website. Highlights the great power of the mantram
ReplyDeleteThanks Hari for the information
DeleteBonjour,j'aime beaucoup votre blog.
ReplyDeleteJ'ai beaucoup de chose à apprendre grâce à vous.
Merci.
Om Mani Padme Hum.
May be this comment will sound outrageous but the Nazis were very interested in the arms described in the ancient books of the Hindu culture trying to applied or copied some of the ancient concepts with some results. The occidental culture doesn't accept the possibility of the presence of avatars in the old world
ReplyDeleteEr.. What if brahmastras were actually weapons activated by voice recognition technology!! And the 'mantras' were actually passwords!!
ReplyDeleteSantosh, i am trying to know more about Gayatri Mantra. As you said.. that you do it daily. Can you tell me as what changes you observed in your self. Say like..I dont recite the mantra... and you do it daily.. say 108 times.. Now, what changes did you observer in yourself.. respective to me.. I know, you cannot launch Brahmastra.. but you must have got some energy out of it.. and If you did not had any benefit out of it..
ReplyDeleteCan you tell us few instances, where people did it for nth times and now they have some internal powers..
I have been reading stuff,.. that mantra shakti, Gayatri chetna or meditation.. one should do these.. but no where i could find the outcome or where people stated that they have been doing and now they have induced some power..
Please guide.. or let us know your thought about the same.
Dear Anonymous friend,
DeleteLearned men say that one shouldn't narrate about the personal spiritual experiences, however in order to uplift the glory of Gayatri mantram i would cite few of my experiences.
Before my upanayana i was a different person altogether, i was spiritually weak, was in worldly attachments and desires. Post Upanayana, as they call it a "second birth" (dvija), it really seem to me as my second birth, i am totally a changed person. My focus has set on spirituality alone, and of course i am still a learner, but everyday some new spiritual/scriptural knowledge keeps adding to my knowledgebase. This is probably the great grace conferred by mother gayatri on me and i am thankful for that.:-)
In short, gravitation towards the desire to gain brahmajnanam is what it installed in me, and i am trying to move twoards the same goal now....ofcourse the journey is long and am probably a beginner then also, the drive is what is imp and that's installed by that mantra japa i think.
I don't know about anyone who gained siddhis, since as per the rule noone would reveal about their siddhis to anyone, it is just a personal elevation and shouldn't be disclosed openly, so there should be many people who are advanced beings but we may not see them speaking about their achievements openly.
You said that bramhastra mantra are related to gayatri mantra. I had talked to many brhamins about this and they said that Baglamukhi mantra is related to bramhastra. Dus maha vidya among wich one is baglamukhi which is used to destroy an enemy.
ReplyDeleteThat also could be true.
Deletecan anyone please tell me ..from where i can find more information about this thing??????
ReplyDeletemay be u need to study puranas and dhanurveda in detail which i am not aware of.
Deletehow long should i recite this mantra to get bhramastra
ReplyDeleteI caution you not to try such things. These are very potent mantras which require one's spiritual energy to be of high standard before one even possesses them. In Kaliyuga I don't think any one of us has the ability to possess these astras hence if any chant goes wrong in pronunciation it may adversely effect us in turn.
DeleteEven the great Kavyakantha ganapati muni had discovered the entire astra vidya hidden in rig veda mantra but goddess renuka (CHinnamasa) stopped him and said this is not the right time for that vidya to manifest in this Kaliyua hence asked him not to disclose it. he didn't teach that vidya to his disciples.
Thata stra vidya would manifest again when Vishnu (as Kalki) would come on earth. We humans are not that elevated to possess that Vidya and astras.
Thanks!
Hi to all,
DeleteLord Vishnu has taken 24 avtaar in all 4 Yugas. In kaliyuga Lord Vishnu is present in breath of all his disciples named 'Budha'. In kaliyuga disciples can make Vishnu happy only by 'namasmaran'. Instead of mantra-tanra, puja, daan, dharma, tirth yatra, bhakti etc. namasmaran of god is the best solution for disciples.
There is a text so called "Viswamitra Samhita" or "Viswamitra Kalpa" this deals with many permutations and combinations of great Gayatri Mantra alone. That's the reason why still every one prescribes a dvija to recite this mantra daily without fail. I can remember one incident told to me by my acharya, I don't know the authenticity since I have not seen the text, but worth to write here to elevate the greatness of Sri Gayatri Mantra. Once in a court of Akbar a learned dvija came in and explained that he is exponent of vedanta and so on, and he can give ample of pramana for any query that raised by learned member in the court. Immediately Birbal questioned him like "Do you know the meaning or inner tattva of gayatri mantra ?" The dvija immediately responded "Yes".
ReplyDeleteBirbal: Before dvija could start the explanation " Stop, first go and learn the actual meaning then you can come to the court with your explanation"
Dvija: went back quitely withour uttering a word
After some months dvija came back to the court
Dvija: Now I have referred almost every text that I have come across, I can explain the tattva and inner meaning of Gayatri Mantra
Birbal: Again, Before dvija could start the explanation " Stop, I think you have not read the references properly please go and read it again"
Dvija: Started referring the scripture and finally started contemplating on the great Gayatri Mantra. After that he completely immersed in brahma jnana and started realizing the ultimate self.
This time King recall the incident and asked whether the dvija has come or not. King posed a query to Birbal why dvija has not come yet with explanation. Does it mean that he was cheating?
Birbal: let's visit his house to find actual situation
Both King and Birbal arrived dvija's home.
King was surprised to see the brahma tejas of dvija which was not there earlier when he visited the court. This time dvija was completely immersed in upasana of Gayatri Mantra.
Having seen King and Bribal at once after his anushtana, Birbal queried that now have to understood the meaning of Gayatri Mantra, a surprising answer came from dvija's mouth, I am not qualified to explain the greatness of that Mantra.
Birbal: Now you have realised the actual meaning. Sorry for troubling you.
Dvija: I should thank you, I have read the scripture but not the inner meaning earlier. Because to prove my intellect in the court to get wealth and money, I challenged the learned members. Now I realized which is the actual wealth and Ananda.
Here ends the story.
Sorry for any typos

tat-saviturvarenyam :- tat - like that; savitu -- sa + vitu = which means that gives birth - able to reproduce - SRUJANSHIL. ( Its not about Sun. Sun is savitu for us but the suprim brahma is the ultimate savitu- that has created this universe.)
bhargo devasya :- bhargo dev means Shiv. ( remember Bhargav is name given to shukracharya after he came out of body of shiva.

Still lot more to know about this but lacks time and space. just explained about goodha artha shabda and not those common in this mantra.
In one of the Issues of Astrological Magazine I saw Bramhastra mantra in full in Nineties. in some column written by some pseudonym
ReplyDeleteI do not remember it exactly now, but I think, the devnagari alphabets is in reverse order of mritasanjivani mantra. mritasanjivani is a samputith form of gayatri mantra and mahamrityunjaya mantra
